GOLF HOLIDAYS IN GHENT
The best hotels for Ghent & Oudenaarde golfbreaks.
Steenhuyse*** - Oudenaarde
In the very centre of Oudenaarde, facing the cathedral and on the edge of the main square, the small Steenhuyse (Stone House) is the most charming hotel in town; arguably in Belgium! A true 'boutique' hotel.
The eight bedrooms at the Steenhuyse are quite simply amazing and all eight are different. Beautifully designed and furnished in a surprisingly modern style for such an old building. Polished wooden floors, hand-picked furniture and some striking features too like baths in the room.
On the ground floor is the traditional breakfast room and the hotel's excellent restaurant. The lobby doubles as a small bar in the evenings but most guests will want to head out to the selection of cafés, bars and restaurants that ring Oudenaarde's main square.
Behind the hotel is a quiet garden and sunny patio; just the spot for a drink in the peace and quiet. Conveniently the hotel has its own car-park, just a five-minute walk away or there is public car-parking behind the cathedral and infront of the police station - i.e. fairly safe!
Leopold Hotel*** - Oudenaarde
The Leopold Hotel in Oudenaarde is the practical choice for your golf holiday near Ghent. A modern three-star hotel, with an enormous free car-park only a couple of hundred yards from the town square. If you plan on spending more time outside the hotel than in it it's the ideal spot.
Plenty of bedrooms at the Leopold so availability is rarely a problem; all of these are spacious enough to make comfortable Twin rooms. The beds are solidly constructed so you will sleep well and there is plenty of hot water for a good shower after your game.
There is a very good breakfast buffet to set you up for the day in the sunny breakfast room beside Reception. Food is available in the evenings at the small bar, but it's mainly snacky items as most residents stroll into town to take advantage of the Belgian bars and restaurants around the square.
Behind the hotel is a paved garden, ideal for foregathering prior to heading into town. In front of the hotel is the town's main car park - so extremely convenient for pulling-up and leaving the car keys in your room!
Auberge du Pecheur**** - Royal Latem
Ghent's gastromantic retreat on the banks of the canal that runs through the exquisite Royal Latem Golf Club's domaine. If you want to get away from it all amongst the resplendent homes of the Ghentlefolk, treat yourself to some fine-dining, waterside tranquillity* and a few games of glorious golf then Belgium has no spot finer than the Auberge du Pecheur.
*Maybe weddings on Saturdays!
Rather surprisingly, the Auberge has a total of thirty-two rooms; however as they are spread across three distinct buildings there is never the feel of a big-hotel. Decorated in subdued tones the bedrooms and bathrooms are cool and classy.
The restaurant at the Auberge du Pecheur is a huge draw for any self-respecting Belgian within dining-distance. Amazing dishes are served at the riverside tables in the Summer months or in the cosy warmth of the dining room when the climate is less clement.
For a post-match or pre-dinner drink there is a street-café style bar parked-up beside the canal, where you can while away an hour or two in the evening sun. The Auberge has plenty of safe parking too, as it sits within the gated community of Sint-Martens-Latem.
Hotel de Flandre****- Ghent
Within the austere exterior of the Hotel de Flandre lurks a thoroughly charming hotel. Part of the 'Historic Hotels' group of Ghent hotels, the interior has been stylishly refurbished without losing any af the charater of the old edifice.
All of the bedrooms at the hotel are spacious and sport a modernist style and furnishings; likewise for the bathrooms.
On the ground floor is a rather stately breakfast room (and a small lounge bar); there is no restaurant at the hotel but the location is super-central so all of the Ghent restaurants and bars are within a few minutes stroll. Parking is taken care of in the nearby multi-storey.
There is a clever extension at the rear of the building, which has added a few extra rooms so you may be sleeping around the old courtyard - nice and quiet for a city-centre hotel.
Monasterium***- Ghent
A rather unusual Ghent hotel created within the walls of the ancient Poortackere monastery and church - a unique opportunity to rest your head in the quiet of a monastic setting (tonsures optional!).
It seems that Belgian monks enjoyed a little more space and homely comforts than elsewhere as their old 'cells' are really rather roomy. Needless to say, plenty of mod-cons have been added by the 'Historic Hotels' group to turn them into simple, yet comfortable accommodation.
An hotel without a restaurant - there is a hearty breakfast of course. However, sitting very close to the centre of Ghent (near the University in fact) there are a huge number of restaurants within a couple of minutes meandering from the Monasterium (we'll recommend a few places for starters).
Car-parking is plentiful at the Monasterium (very handy for the city-centre) on both sides of the buildings. And, if all seems lost on the golf course, there is always the old chapel for seeking some divine intervention...
Marriott****- Ghent
A modern hotel in a centuries old building: the Ghent Marriott sits right alongside ane of the moin canals in Ghent and is perfectly placed for sightseeing - on land or water!
As you would expect from a Marriott, the bedrooms have a modern style and furnishings; likewise for the bathrooms.
The Marriott is quite simply a very practical Ghent hotel hiding behind a old facade with a great location.
Handily, for the centre of Ghent, the Marriott is incorporated into a multi-storey car-park (for which there is a daily charge).
