Golf holidays in Waterloo
The site of the famous 1815 battle between Napoleon and the British allies remains a fairly small town although Waterloo is gradually expanding and spreading out towards the battlefields and the Mont de Lion. Not surprisingly the battlefield remains the main draw for tourists (maybe not the French) and historians will enjoy the small museum in the middle of town dedicated to the famous conflict.
In all honesty, Waterloo has never been a particularly lively place; however there are now a few restaurants, cafés and bars strung out along its High Street and a little cluster of eateries has also cropped up around the Grand Hotel and Lodge. So there are options for dining out occasionally during your golf break in Waterloo - just don't expect a wild party town!
Waterloo golf courses
Waterloo, or more correctly, the province of Brabant-Walloon, has become the epicentre of golf in Belgium. The region has a dozen good quality golf courses within an hour's drive of the town ranging from exclusive Clubs like Royal Waterloo to more commercial Golf Clubs like Pierrepont: there is something to appeal to every class of golfer on holiday in Belgium.
As you might imagine the golf courses being inland are all parkland or woodland layouts, but there is plenty of variety as they have all been expertly crafted by a range of well-known (and a few not so well-known) golf architects who have expressed themselves across the greensward.
Getting to Waterloo
By far the easiest route is the Eurotunnel or Dover-Calais ferries, as Waterloo and its golf courses are under two hours from Calais, it's perfect for a quick break and a refreshing change of scenery if you live in the southeast of England.
Alternatively coming from further north, the Hull-Zeebrugge ferry cruises overnight and will drop you in Zeebrugge in plenty of time for a round at the wonderful Royal Zoute or Royal Oostende on arrival before driving on down to Waterloo for the rest of your golf holiday.
