NOTTINGHAMSHIRE GOLF HOLIDAYS
Complete guide to golfbreaks in England's heartlands.
Golf Holidays in Nottinghamshire
In the centre of England, wedged between the old industrial and mining strongholds of Nottingham and Rotherham, are some truly wonderful golf courses. The towns may not feature too highly on any 'prettiest towns in the UK' list but there are rays of rejuvenation here-and-there and the landscapes and villages in between are very moorish. And you never know, maybe swarms of visiting golfers will boost the regeneration of these once-thriving towns...
Nottinghamshire - Golf Courses
There are four golf courses north of Nottingham that will grab your attention and are the overriding reason for golfers to spend time in this corner of the UK. Notts County at Hollinwell is without doubt one of the finest in the land, supported by nearby Coxmoor that runs over very similar heathland terrain. Further up, Sherwood Forest is surrounded by legendary trees (as you might imagine!) and just up over the border into South Yorkshire is Lindrick, another bastion of English golf: four famous names and rightly so for their long history and heritage.
Notts County - where to stay
Accommodation in Nottinghamshire is generally in short supply; however, we have toured the county in ever-increasing circles and have found the very best places to stay for all varieties of golf groups. There are some good hotels in Nottingham, but it takes a while to get in and out as the city is large and quite a way from the best golf courses.
Geographically, the epicentre of the golfing action is Mansfield, nowadays a little run-down but on the rebound. Here, there are only a couple of small, fairly basic, guesthouses and a TravelLodge: perhaps suited to golfers on a budget who like to get to the courses as quickly as possible each day. Up the road in the village of Edwinstowe, much more comfort and classier cuisine is available at the Forest Lodge on the High Street. For most golfing parties, we would say that this is the place to stay.
For true luxury, it's necessary to head a little further afield up to Barnby Moor where the old coaching inn Ye Olde Bell offers lovely rooms, fine food, a large garden and an enormous spa: all the basics! It's convenient for Lindrick and Sherwood Forest Golf Clubs too, whereas Hollinwell and Coxmoor are about 45 minutes away.
