Golf Holidays in Yorkshire
Everybody knows that York is an enchanting Viking/Roman/medieval city in the heart of the UK packed with tourists in the Summer months: not many however, realise the quality and variety of golf that is within easy reach of its walls. And being so central in the UK it is ideally placed for golfers reuniting from all corners of the UK.
York has a fascinating past, which is easily discovered in a few hours strolling the cobbled streets and narrow lanes; it now has a exciting future as a top UK golf destination. Luckily, the city is already well equipped to cater for visitors - teashops, cafés, pubs and restaurants abound.
York - Golf Courses
There are two courses close to the city centre at Strensall and Fulford plus half-a-dozen more within forty-five minutes drive: plenty of options for a golf weekend, week or why not a fortnight!
Fulford is a highly-ranked parkland course (remember Bernhard Langer up the tree?); Strensall has enjoyed a lot of recent investment and is not far behind.
Casting your golfing net further afield, a host of superb courses come into play. One of the finest in the country is out at Ganton (on the way to Bridlington) an endlessly entertaining course. And it has its own cake!
There are three more excellent courses to the East of Leeds (i.e. on the York side): Moortown (a Ryder Cup venue in the 50s), Alwoodley and Moor Allerton.
North of York is the daunting moorland challenge of Pannal; over in flowery Harrogate there is a good little golfing test; South of York is the busy Member's Club at Selby.
No shortage of golf in Yorkshire!
Yorkshire - where to stay
Yorkshire is a big county (split into its three 'Ridings'), so there are plenty of potential bases for your golfbreak. However, after considerable research, we believe that York is unbeatable - for all the things that go to make up a memorable golf holiday.
York is the best place to stay and the best place to stay in York is the Hotel du Vin.
A stylish hotel just outside the Michaelgate and with a large car-park it has everything you need for a luxurious UK golfbreak. Other alternatives are the Malmaison hotel, just inside the walls or plenty of three-star hotels too for those on a budget.
Harrogate is another option but a little removed from the best golf courses and only a small selection of dining options. Leeds is a big city with big city traffic, so lengthy runs out to play each day would be involved.
York - out and about
Once you return from your day's golf and it's time for refreshmentstse you'll realise that you have come to the right place! York is littered with fine pubs within the walls and alongside the river. There are plenty of micro-breweries too, so you will be spoiled for choice of hostelry.
Then on to dinner and your pick of at least one hundred restaurants in the city, from fine dining to pub grub, oriental flavours and all the major chains too. We have a few favourite resataurants and will provide some recommendations along with your travel documents. Suffice to say, you won't go hungry in York!
