For ease of access to the Northumberland coast with its remarkable scenery and golf courses, the place to stay is Alnwick. Possibly the most visited tourist destination in northeast England with its famous castle and gardens it has plenty to offer in the way of pubs and restaurants too. It is also well placed for Lindisfarne - the Holy Island, the wildlife sanctuary of the Farne Islands and wee trips to Scotland or Hadrian's Wall.
In the centre of Alnwick, just down from the triumphal Hotspur Tower and stone arch of Bondgate, is a centuries old coaching inn - The White Swan. A simple three-star hotel (with five-star staff) that provides an excellent base for your Northumbrian golf holiday. The floors are charmingly creaky but bedrooms are bright and comfortable, re-decorated regularly, and bathrooms steadily upgradede (all of the top-floor so far). It has a good size car-park and strollability to all the shops, cafés and pubs along the ever-improving Alnwick High Street.
The White Swan offers two options for dining: the informal setting of Hardy's Bistro and bar or the fabulous Olympic restaurant with its regularly changing seasonal menu. The oak panels of the Olympic restaurant were dismantled from the Titanic's sister ship (SS Olympic) and carefully installed in the hotel. A truly historic dining room where you can sail back in time...
Each morning a hearty breakfast will be served to you in the Olympic Restaurant to set you up for a day battling the North Sea breezes! For dining elsewhere there are numerous other restaurants in Alnwick and some little fishy options in the villages out on the Northumbrian coast.
