Almost lost amongst the pines on Sardinia's quiet western coast you will find the ultra-luxurious hideaway that is the Is Arenas golf resort. Only completed in 2008, the hotel is the latest word in contemporary design and style.  Sure to provoke much discussion, the hotel has to be admired for its clean simple lines, cool interior and elegant furnishings.

The bedrooms are well-proportioned albeit reasonably minimalist in terms of decor.  That said, they retain all the attributes that you could want or need: spacious Suites are also available.

The hotel has a very good restaurant, bright and airy, that serves a combination of local produce with a refreshing modern touch here and there befitting of the style of the hotel.  Please note that dining out will involve a journey by car as the resort sits in such splendid isolation.

The hotel has a good sized central pool and just 400 yards away a stretch of private beach complete with sun-loungers, parasols and beach bar.  And by the way, if you feel you're not up to the 400 yard stroll to dip your toe in the Med, the helpful staff will be only too happy to offer you a lift in their beach/golf buggy!

Embedded in thick pine forest In the quiet seclusion of the west coast, Is Arenas demands thought and accuracy from the Tee to position yourself for the ideal approach and a feasible putt: making it a course you will want to play more than once.  Vast sums are spent on maintenance, indeed the lush bright green fairways come as quite a visual shock on arrival compared to the dark green maquis and sandy tones elsewhere. 

Around and about Is Arenas

One of the big appeals of the area is its seclusion.  If you would like to "get away form it all" for a few days, Is Arenas makes a very good hideout.

The main town on the west coast is Oristano about half-an-hour by car from Is Arenas.  Not a main tourist destination it is a place to mix with the locals, try your tongue at Italian (or Sardinian, good luck!) sit in the square or browse the shops. There are some good restaurants too and don't miss out on the area's fine white wine "Vernaccia" arguably the best white wine made on the island.

The lands around Oristano form one of the largest wetland regions in Europe, a haven for birdspotters and wildlife enthusiasts as many breeds choose to Winter beside the marshlands and saltwater lagoons.  If you visit from late Autumn through to early Spring you are sure to see stands of flamingoes, fluttering bright pink against the bottle green hillsides.

Just south of Oristano you will find the remains of Tharros, the largest Roman settlement on the island.  This covers a huge area and combined with the salt marshes at Cabras (from whence comes "Sardinian Caviar" - Grey Mullett roe in fact) and the towns of San Salvatore (which Spaghetti Western aficionados may well recognise) and San Giovanni di Sinis makes for a very full day out.
