LAGOS & PENINA HOTELS
Our recommended hotels for golf breaks in Lagos & Penina.
The Penina Resort*****
Although Portugal never featured in The British Empire, Penina has an distinct colonial feel about the place. Redolent of an epoch when the first Brits motored down as far as the Algarve with clubs on the parcel shelf: you wouldn't be surprised to be greeted by a fellow with a waxed moustache and pith helmet. This quaintly 'mad dogs and Englishmen' atmosphere seems to exude from the hotel out across the grounds and golf course.
The Penina hotel is a very comfortable and well positioned base for a golf holiday. Bedrooms are original with tiled floors, there are large lounges, a big outdoor pool and a very comfortable oak-panelled bar/clubhouse.
There are two restaurants at Penina: one a self-service buffet, which is very good value; the other a slightly more formal a-la-carte restaurant where the dishes are exceptional, albeit a little more expensive. For dining out, nearby Alvor has some great little seaside restaurants and the larger resort of Portimao is just a short drive (or taxi) away.
Tivoli Lagos*****
The Tivoli Lagos hotel spreads over an intricate conglomeration of buildings around a central terrace and pool in the centre of Lagos. Complete with an underground car park it makes the ideal location for enjoying the best of the lovely old town and all of the local golf courses.
Bedrooms are good and vary a little in shape and size depending on which building yours is in. One thing is for sure they are all very comfortable and well furnished with all the features that you would expect from a five-star hotel.
There is a modern bar and the restaurant is split into a buffet area and a silver service section - the choice is yours. Needless to say there are plenty more dining options in the cobbled streets outside.
The Tivoli also has an indoor pool and a rather nice, if small, spa area, which are most beneficial in the cooler months.
Vila Gale Lagos****
On the outskirts of town, very close to the Palmares golf course, the Vila Gale was part of a shiny new seaside residential are that is now hanging somewhat in limbo. The hotel however is finished and fully operation. Designed and built to five-star standards but run by the Vila Gale group as a four-star it offers exceptional value for money with a wealth of facilities.
Thoroughly modern in style, the Vila Gale hotel is a low rise, U-shaped establishment around a central garden and pool. This means that some bedrooms are a long way from the reception, bar and restaurant. The latter offers both a buffet and a served format for you to choose from. Dining out will involve a five-minute car journey into town.
One of the highlights of the hotel; is the fabulous Zen spa that occupies a significant portion of the top floor. Aside from the array of massage jets in the dark calm of the indoor pool, there is a range of treatments available to relax, revitalise and tone in a variety of ways.
