GOLFING HOLIDAY GUIDE TO NORTH BERWICK, GULLANE & MUIRFIELD
Course reviews, hotel recommendations & tips for golfbreaks in East Lothian.
Golf holidays in North Berwick
North Berwick has just about everything the holiday golfer could wish for: a nice size town, easy to get to and a huge number of nearby courses (mostly links). Ideal!
The town has a range of hotels from the big, luxurious Marine Hotel down to a range of good value B&Bs, so there is something to suit every golfers preference (and purse).
Getting to the golf courses around North Berwick could not be easier: from Dunbar out in the East to Aberlady in the West will only take half-an-hour and in between you will pass Muirfield, Gullane, Luffness, Archerfield and Renaissance - not a bad run of golf courses!
Dining wise there are at least a dozen good restaurants in North Berwick, plus various pubs that offer upmarket pub-grub, plus half-a-dozen Fish and Chip options - so you won't go hungry!
All in all, North Berwick could well be Scotland's finest golfing destination.
Golf Holidays in Edinburgh
If you are looking for bright lights and plenty of evening entertainment then Edinburgh has it all. A city that is easy enough to get in and out of to the golf courses each day and with a huge range of hotels to choose from. Whatever your style of accommodation we will find it for you in Edinburgh. Needless to add that the options for dining out are also numerous.
Golf Holidays in Muirfield
Muirfield is a bit of a legend amongst golfers and there is an unmistakeable aura of awe about the Clubhouse when first you enter the hallowed edifice. Knowing the events that have taken place here and the greats that have trodden the floors it's hard not to be inspired.
For the full 'Muirfield Experience' we recommend staying at Greywalls the hotel on the drive down to the Clubhouse. Not only is it a fine country house style hotel with an intimate atmosphere and bedrooms overlooking the course but they also have some Tee-times for residents - especially if you stay on a Sunday night and can play on the following Monday. Please ask us for availability - you may be pleasantly surprised!
The village of Muirfield itself is just a conglomeration of (rather nice) houses with no real centre to speak of: another good reason to stay at Greywalls.
Golf Holidays in Gullane
Gullane is a much smaller town than North Berwick, mainly just a string of shops along the main road beside the impressive white Clubhouse of Gullane No. 1. There is one hotel in town: The Golf Inn, which is very nicely kept and would make a great base for a quiet golf holiday in Scotland with the ease of walking to play at the Gullane courses and even Luffness New at a stretch!
There are couple of one or two bedroomed B&Bs in town as well, but dining options are rather limited so you will probably find yourself in The Golf Inn at dinner time anyway!
Golf Holidays in Dirleton
A little hideaway that is largely undiscovered is the village of Dirleton between Dunbar and North Berwick, so well-placed for all the East Lothian golf courses. It's a sleepy village, off the main road between North Berwick and Muirfield, with a few houses, a large green in front of its castle ruins. There are two options for accommodation in Dirleton: The Castle Inn a gastro-pub with six simple rooms or the Open Arms a boutique hotel with a great restaurant that makes a superb golf 'retreat'. If all you need for your après golf is a roaring fire and a delicious dinner then The Open Arms could well be your ideal location.
