TURNBERRY HOTEL REVIEW
Where to stay on a Turnberry golfbreak.
The Turnberry Hotel*****
On Scotland's balmy Southwest coast, warmed by the Gulf Stream (keep an eye out for the palm trees!), Turnberry is one of the legends of Scottish golf. What golfer cannot call to mind climactic scenes from so many Open Championships over the fabled Ailsa links?
Situated on a rugged stretch of Atlantic coastline, where the rolling Scottish hills tumble down to the Ocean, Turnberry is unquestionably one of the great golf resorts of the world. The entire estate covers some 800 acres, encompassing the hotel, the Ailsa and Kintyre courses, the golf lodges, plus the recent additions of the Colin Montgomerie golf academy and the spa.
The hotel sits atop a small rise, gazing out over the two courses and on to Ailsa Craig in looming in the Atlantic. It is a stately building that underwent a makeover for the 2009 Open and has been rejuvenated in a very attractive and stylish manner.
There remains a real sense of the traditions of the game within its oak-lined walls, yet the public spaces have been brightened - making good use of the vast picture windows. The bar has been separated from the Drawing room and a new "Sports Bar" added named after the famed Nicklaus/Watson tussle - Duel in the Sun.
The food continues to be exceptional with everything for the main 1906 restaurant being made from scratch in the vast hotel kitchens. if you like you can even request to dine in the kitchen (there's a dedicated dining room) and watch the chefs at work.
Bedrooms have beem modernsied (although a goodly number of the traditional design still remain) have been tastefully furnished and carry all the five-star accessories you woudl expect, plus the trade mark "Heavenly Beds" which more than live up to their name!
