THE BEST HOTELS FOR COSTA BRAVA GOLF HOLIDAYS
Our recommended hotels for golfbreaks to northeastern Spain.
Hotel Garbi*** - Calella de Palafrugell
Overlooking the bay of Calella de Palafrugell,
where whitewashed houses tumble down to the water's edge to welcome home the brightly
coloured fishing boats, there is arguably no better place in Catalonia to stay on your golf holiday than
the Hotel Garbi, for a taste of real Catalan hospitality.
Choose from three-star bedrooms in the original building or four-star bedrooms in the new wing. All are
bright and airy, well proportioned and furnished; plus they
all benefit from air conditioning and a sea-view balcony across the pines and village of Calella de Palafrugell. Below you, the shady gardens encompass the outdoor pool, sun-loungers and patio-bar: all very relaxing.
The Garbi has a very good restaurant enclosed within its huge glass windows or you can dine outside around the pool. Unusually, it is connected to the hotel via a short tunnel and
lift. Dining in the restaurant is a treat – particularly
the desserts and wines (Enric the owner also run a patisserie
and fine wine emporium in the town, well worth a browse!).
The village and sandy coves of Calella de Palafrugell
are a mere five-minute stroll away, ideal for dipping a toe in the Med or dining at the multitude of small restaurants alongside the beach. As soon as you see the town, you'll realise why it's such a hit with the well-to-do Barcelonian set.
Sixth night free!
(Excluding July & August)
N.B. Single Supplements are very, very reasonable!
Park Hotel San Jorge****- Platja d'Aro
On a spit of land between two coves, the Park Hotel San Jorge lies amidst pine trees just outside the busy resort of Platja d’Aro.
A peaceful setting beside the sea, that still allows night owls easy access to all the bars and restaurants of one of Catalunya’s liveliest resorts. The hotel is ideally placed just a fifteen-minute stroll into town at a leisurely pace (or there are plenty of taxis!), so you are assured of a quiet night’s sleep in the comfortable bedrooms or suites.
Although just yards from the Mediterranean beaches below, the hotel has a good sized swimming pool complete with bar and terrace-spa where you can treat yourself to a massage with a Mediterranean view! There are also tennis courts and sauna.
There are two restaurants within the hotel, one in an informal buffet style the other offering a more gastronomic ‘à-la-carte’ menu featuring many Catalan specialities.
Camiral***** - PGA Catalunya
A strikingly modern construction that dominates the skyline above the two tremendous courses at PGA Catalunya. The hotel was constructed to attract both golfers and business clientele (hence its conference centre) so sometimes has quite a mixed residency during the week.
For golfers the location is excellent, two courses and truly outstanding practice facilities on your doorstep. Plus, it is close to the main Barcelona – Girona arterial route so swiftly accessed from either airport.
The hotel is modern throughout, bedrooms are well designed with extended sitting areas and balconies looking out over the central pool. There is also a small indoor pool and spa area; albeit curiously positioned amidst the business centre?!?
The Clubhouse will welcome you for lunch and in the evening there is fine dining in the restaurant or simpler dishes are available in the bar and lounge. If you feel the need to dine off campus, we can recommend some excellent restaurants in the villages around or an evening in Girona or even Barcelona is feasible.
Hotel Carlemany**** - Girona
For early or late season golf holidays, Girona makes a lively base as there is always plenty of life in the city. And, being relatively small in size, it is easy enough to get in and out of to the golf courses, coast and other attractions of Catalonia. The bedrooms at the Carlemany are bright with air-conditioning and all the amenities you would expect of a modern city hotel.
Centrally located, the modernised Carlemany is surrounded by the smart boutiques and cafés of Girona; strolling through these you will soon come to the river and the old quarter with its narrow cobbled streets of tapas bars and restaurants. Culture vultures will also enjoy the pair of cathedrals, several museums and the fortifications at the top of the town.
On the ground floor, the coffee shop is very popular with the locals as is the funky Indigo bar and brasserie. There is also El Pati Verd, a more traditional restaurant that is encircled by flora of all genres giving a nice feeling of dining in the forest rather than a city centre!
Handily, especially for golfers, there is an underground car-park with direct lift access to the lobby: clubs can be let safely in your car overnight.
