The Tournament Hotel - Palazzo Dal Pozzo
We shall be staying in a palace beside a castle, just above the still blue waters of Lake Maggiore. The Palazzo Dal Pozzo is the sister hotel to the Castello dal Pozzo, a pair of historic buildings. They sit side-by-side in their own park, dominating the little village of Oleggio Castello on the hillside above the pretty lakeside town of Arona on the lakeshore below.
The Palazzo has well appointed bedrooms, two good restaurants, a wine-bar and (at last!) their outdoor pool is now finished and ready to refresh after a long morning on the golf course.
For dining out and playing on the lake it is only a mile down the hill to Arona where there are many restaurants, caffés, shops and bars around the central piazza, plus the embarcadero to board the frequent ferries that skim over the waters of Lake Maggiore up to Isola Bella and Stresa or over to Angera.
The Tournament Schedule
Sunday 11th May
Check-in at the Palazzo dal Pozzo***** an historic palace and castle on the hilltop above Arona looking out over Lake Maggiore. Competitors will be staying in the Palazzo (there are only eight rooms in the Castello). See below for more details about the hotel and travel information.
Evening: Reception, tournament registration and welcome dinner in the Palazzo's Le Fief restaurant (wines included).
Monday 12th May
Morning: First competition round at Castelconturbia G.C.
One of Piemonte's most exclusive Golf Clubs dating all the way back to 1898. Nowadays it has 27 heavily-wooded holes styled by Robert Trent Jones Snr. around the delightful yellow ochre Clubhouse. Castelconturbia has twice hosted the Italian Open.
Castelconturbia G.C. is about half-an-hour from the Palazzo.
Afternoon and evening: at leisure.
Tuesday 13th May
Morning: Second competition round at Iles Borromées G.C.
A more recent addition to the Lake Maggiore golf scene that rides around the hills and forests of the National Park between Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta. A few climbs and descents create some spectacular holes and wonderful views of the Alps and the lakes. Here, buggies are included for all by the way.
Iles Borromées G.C. is about twenty minutes from the Palazzo.
Afternoon and evening: at leisure.
Wednesday 14th May
A full day off to relax and soak up the beauty of Lake Maggiore and the surrounding hills.
In Arona or Stresa you can catch the frequent ferries out to Lake Maggiore's islands - Isole Bella, Madre and Pescatore for a stroll through their palaces and gardens or savour the flavours of one of their many restaurants.
You could also head off for a tour of the lakeshore or up and over through the national park to charming little Lake Orta.
Thursday 15th May
Morning: Third competition round at Bogogno G.C.
Designed by Robert van Hagge in 1997 Bogogno feels a lot older due to the dense mature woodland that lines every hole. There are two excellent courses around the fashionable rose Clubhouse; we will be playing the Del Conte course, a classic parkland design; frequently used for PGA tournaments and major amateur events.
Bogogno G.C. is about half-an-hour from the Palazzo.
Evening: Reception and prize-giving dinner in the Castello Dal Pozzo (wines included) - a unique opportunity to wine and dine in a devine Italian castle!
