GOLF HOLIDAYS IN MONS
The best places to stay and play in Mons.
Golf holidays in Mons
Not far over the French border, Mons is one of Belgium’s more characterful, university towns that lends itself perfectly to tourism - even without the added joy of golf! Mons is the perfect size for strolling; the network of cobbled streets linking the squares and striking bell towers will become familiar even on just a one or two-night golfbreak.
The main square 'La Grand Place' is dominated by the town hall, unmistakeably Flemish in style, which looks out over a square rimmed with brasseries and cafés, every one with a beer menu as long as a belly putter. The streets that lead off the main square are lined with shops and restaurants ranging from kebab and burger bars (it is a university town after all!), through pizza parlours, modernist Mediterranean to gastronomic gems: whatever your taste you’ll find a menu in Mons.
Still quite gritty in a few corners, Mons however enjoyed a full makeover when it was elected European Capital of Culture for 2015 – so churches were cleaned, cobbles re-laid, shopfronts tarted-up and nearly every nook and cranny enjoyed a serious brush-up.
Mons Golf Clubs
The two Golf Clubs that draw golfers to Mons are Royal Hainaut, which has a timeless feel to its 27 woodland holes and charming pavilion Clubhouse; the other is Mont Garni, once a manorial farmstead (some time ago now), it has become another popular parkland layout - with plenty of added water! Either of these courses would be worth a visit to Mons themselves, but wait, there's more!
There are courses at Pierpont, which has seen a dramatic improvement over the last few years in terms of course presentation and Clubhouse facilities and also at the very relaxed Mormal, making it a good choice for higher-Handicappers.
A short drive from Mons will bring into play many of the Waterloo courses too such as Rigenée and the 36-holes at La Tournette: you will be spoiled for choice!
Getting to Mons
By far the easiest route is the Eurotunnel or Dover-Calais/Dunkerque ferries. Mons and its golf courses are under two hours from Calais, ao it's perfect for a quick Belgian golf break and a refreshing change of scenery if you live in the southeast of England.
Alternatively, if you are coming from further north, the Hull-Zeebrugge ferry cruises that run overnight will drop you in Zeebrugge in plenty of time for a round at the wonderful Royal Zoute or Royal Oostende on arrival. Mons itself is then just an hour's drive from the coast.
