THORPENESS & ALDEBURGH GOLF HOLIDAYS
Our guide to the best Suffolk golfbreaks.
Golf Holidays in Suffolk
Easy to access from large parts of England with fun seaside towns to stay along the long shingly beaches and half-a-dozen centenarian golf courses to play; the county of Suffolk offers wonderful golf holidays in a quieter part of the country. The Suffolk terrain seems ideal for golf, which explains why the game has been played here for so long. Golfwise, the county offers a little of everything: heathland, parkland and pure links too!
Foodies will enjoy the vast array of fresh fish and seafood landed on the coast each day (and for sale at numerous beach huts): beeries will enjoy the fine produce of Suffolk's Adnams brewery!
It's also worth noting that East Anglia is the driest corner of the British Isles, so if anywhere in England is good for a low-season golfbreak, it has to be Suffolk or Norfolk!
Golf Holidays - Thorpeness
In a very nice way, Thorpeness is slightly weird. The tiny town was purchased in 1910 by one Stuart Ogilvie who sought to transform it into an idyllic holiday village - an early 20th Century theme park, if you will. A safe haven for families and children to enjoy a Summer by the sea in a slightly unreal, over-designed way. Life in Thorpeness centres around the 'Meare' a large boating lake complete with tea shop and a bevy of swans. By the way, the village's only pub is just across the road, if more grown-up refreshments are called for.
Thorpeness' other big attraction is of course the Golf Club and hotel. A great base for a golfbreak with the village and the beach within strolling distance, plus all the other Suffolk Golf Clubs neatly arranged around it within a short drive.
Golf Holidays - Aldeburgh
For a more traditional British holiday resort feel for your Suffolk golf holiday then Aldeburgh is the place to be. Just along the coast from Thorpeness it has all the attributes for seaside frolic: a long beach, ice-cream, pubs, cafés, restaurants and hotels. It also has a rich vein of active seamen that land all sorts of North Sea produce right on the beach every morning. Make the most of the fresh crab and lobster whilst you are in Aldeburgh - it's delicious!
Getting to Thorpeness & Aldeburgh
If you are based anywhere on the eastern side of the UK or even as far across as the Midlands there are few obstacles to getting to Suffolk (unless you have to navigate around London and the M25). So for very many golfers Suffolk is the ideal venue for a breath of sea air and some high-class golfing action.
