GOLF HOLIDAYS AT LAKE COMO
Lake Como golfbreaks - everything you need to know.
Golf holidays - Lake Como
Lake Como has the largest town of all the Italian Lakes - Como, which is quite a busy place with more than just tourism to offer. Situated on one of the main arterieal routes through the mountains from Switzerland the ancient walled town has long guarded the northern entrance into Italy. This also made it a handy place to collect taxes from the passing traders - a nice little earner for the town! Nowadays Como is still a busy town and its proximity to both Milan and Switzerland makes it both a tourist town and a business centre, ensuring Como has a life of its own all year round.
Quite simply, Como is one of our favourite European golfing destinations with the widest choice of golf courses to be found around the Italian Lakes. If you have never played golf in Italy, Como is a good place to start!
Lake Como Golf Clubs
The golf courses around Lake Como are quite simply superb. Funded by their Members (well heeled citizens of Milan) Lake Como Golf Clubs are not just places to play golf, but places to be seen as well.
The closest to Como and probably the toughest is Villa d'Este in the thick pines above the lake with its wonderful Clubhouse. In many ways it's a fine Italian restaurant that just happens to have a mouth-watering golf course too!
The other private Golf Clubs of Como are the very swanky 36-hole set-up at Monticello that has hosted the Italian Open on many occasions, the reclusive Barlassina with a pearl of a course and strong belief in the traditions of the game. High on a hill stands the mountainous Menaggio Cadenabbia with its rumbunctious course that rolls around the hillsides offering superb views over the lake and a wonderfully rustic Clubhouse.
More recent additions to the Lake Como golf scene are La Pinetina in the depths of the forest and Carimate further south close to the castle of the same name. Jack Nicklaus fans will appreciate Le Robinie a more commercially run course with a hotel on-site, Tee-time availability at weekends and very close to Malpensa airport for a quick round on arrival and departure days.
A little further removed is the dreamy Alpine course at Bergamo, home to Costantino Rocca and 27 holes of golfing joy in the clear mountain air. Well worth the drive across from Como, or just ask if you would like to stay in Bergamo, closer to the course? We know just the place to stay!
Como Hotels
Como is a busy town that has expanded over the years to fill the narrow cleft in the Alpine foothills that extends south from the lake towards Milan. Land here is quiet a premium so there is little room in town for sprawling hotels with gardens and outdoor pools: Como hotels are primarily functional. That is not to say that they are not very comfortable too and to be honest, with so much to enjoy around the lake you are more than likely to spend very little time within your hotel confines! If you would like a super five-star base for your Como golf holiday then look outside Como around the lake. Back in the day there was more room to build along the lake shore and here you will find some palatial hotels such as the Villa d'Este and Tremezzo Palace where we can arrange for you to stay should you prefer? (And don't mind a drive or a taxi for dining out).
Within the walls of Como, the finest hotel is the Albergo Terminus. Recently converted from a magnificent lakeside residence it has a warm, timeless feel to its halls and bedrooms, plus a prime location too! Right next door to the Terminus is the Palace Hotel, a much larger establishment that caters for business clientele as much as for tourists. The largest rooms at the Palace are the traditonal ones in the restaurant wing, old-fashioned but more spacious than the newly refurbished modern rooms.
Our other Lakeside hotel in Como is the Barchetta Excelsior. Set overlooking the Piazza Cavour with the lake beyond, it is no thing of beauty externally (although Mussolini may have loved it) but from the inside the lake-view rooms have the best view of the lake across the wide open piazza.
For those who don't mind, or even appreciate, the odd quirk the place to stay is the Due Corti at the rear of the medieval walls. The Due Corti dates back hundreds of years, legend says it was the very first hotel in Como and this is easy to believe once you witness its higgeldy-pigedly corridors and ancient exposed masonry. It has plenty of charm and the staff are fantastic (so is the restaurant) - well worth considering for a taste of classic Como.
Of course if you are in any doubt please call and ask us, we know Lake Como well , so we'll be happy to advise you an the best place for your golfing party to stay.
Lake Como - what to see and do
Como is a fair-sized city and, as is so common in Italy, it has a tough exterior and a sweet centre. Como's kernel is encased by square medieval walls, within which lies tourist heaven. In the very centre of Como is the magnificent Doumo with its white marble facade and small piazza in front. All around, narrow streets and broad piazzas spread out in a (sort of) grid system that are lined with shops, caffes, bars, gelaterias, restaurants, enotecas, churches, pizzerias, museums, birrerias, more caffes, more gelaterias, more shops, trattorias and pasticcerias all culminating in it's lakeside walkway and the ferry boats that scoot across the deep, still waters between the sheer pine-clad hills to all points north.
At the front of town is a busy embarcadero where Lake Como's commuters arrive every morning heading to work in the city and holidaymakers step aboard for the various aquatic excursions available. The classic Lake Como day trip is up to Bellagio , a picture perfect little town on the point between tho two legs of the lake. The town is an impossibly beautiful sight as you approach, with coloured houses crawling up the hillside from the water's edge. Narrew entangled streets are populated with handicraft and souvenir shops between the myriad restaurants. Be warned though, it's very very popular with tourists, in fact crammed in July and August! A longer trip is further on up into Swiss waters at the far end of the lake.
Staying on dry land the city of Milan is less that an hour away by train and has a lot to see: its Duomo is quite an incredible sight. As are some of the prices in the glittering Galleria shopping arcades just beside it!
Milan & Monza golf holidays
Milan is a big city, arguably Italy's most important city in terms of trade and business, so perhaps not the perfect venue for a relaxing Italian golfbreak! However if you happen to be in town for business or cultural reasons there are Fairways close at hand when you feel the need to escape the urban sprawl.
The best course is out by Monza - which is a nice little place to stay in its own right and there are other courses around Milan too, which we know. Please let us know if you are interested in a golf holiday around Milan or just a round or two during a city-break, we can advise you on where to stay, recommend hotels and arrange Green-Fees for you at a number of Milan's Golf Clubs.
Getting to Como
Very easy to get to with so many flights to Milan's two airports - Linate and Malpensa, from departure points all across the British Isles and Europe.
From either airport you can be beside beautiful Lake Como or on the First Tee in under one hour's drive.
