|Tivoli Marina Vilamoura*****
The Tivoli Marina dominates Vilamoura both physically and in terms of quality: a large hotel that has just about everything to make your holiday as comfortable as possible.
Without a doubt, one of the best Vilamoura hotels that will make you Vilamoura golf holiday a comfortable and stylish trip. The bedrooms are spacious and nicely furnished, all with balconies – either overlooking the marina or gazing out to sea.
There is a big garden between the hotel and the Mediterranean, with direct access to the beach; indoor and outdoor pools, a first floor piano-bar with commanding views over the marina, two restaurants – the larger of which (Chilli) offers an extensive buffet each evening, the other restaurant (Peppers Steakhouse) offers a-la-carte dining designed to appeal to golfers in modern surroundings with full length picture windows overlooking the Vilamoura marina. On top of all this (or rather underneath!) there is a row of shops on the ground floor.
The Dona Filipa hotel is part of the history of golf in Portugal. Now owned by the JJW Hotels chain, who also own the San Lorenzo and Pinheiros Altos golf courses, this is the best place to stay in order to play golf at the fabulous San Lorenzo. Although, in something of a geographic pun, the hotel borders the 15th hole of the Vale do Lobo Royal course.
The bedrooms all have balconies and by retaining their original dark wood furnishings and polished tiled floors they have a classical feel. In contrast, other areas of the hotel are decorated in lighter pastel shades bestowing an airy ambience.
The hotel's main restaurant opens out onto the compact sunny garden with its swimming pool, from here you can wander on down to the beach just a few hundred yards away. Upstairs there is a second, smaller, more gastronomic restaurant.
The Dona Filipa hotel also has seven very spacious modern suites available, but being so few in number they do need to be booked well in advance.
At first sight a perplexing building, dazzlingly pink, close to the ocean on the South side of the Quinta do Lago resort area. Once inside the hotel the thought behind the design is evident as the crescent of balconies on the ocean side peer out across the Ria Formosa nature reserve to the hotel’s private beach beyond (complete with beach restaurant).
Should you not wish to take the short stroll over to the beach, you will find the outdoor pool at Quinta do Lago on the first floor with plenty of space for sunbathing close to the poolside bar: there is also an indoor pool.
The intimate gastronomic restaurant the “Ca d’Oro” is based primarily on Venetian cuisine: the larger, main restaurant has a more relaxed atmosphere and features regional dishes.
Standard bedrooms are very well sized, with balconies or patios on the ground floor, luxurious suites are also available (pictured).
The Tivoli Victoria hotel sits outside Vilamoura on the golf course of the same name - Arnold Palmer's latest addition to the Vilamoura golf scene. A large, modern hotel that extends width-ways rather than upwards, thereby keeping the skyline and views from the Victoria golf course uncluttered.
The avant-garde nature of the hotel design is evident form the moment you enter the large marble lobby complete with its reconstructed tree. The theme carries on into the bedrooms which are large and look out over the course or the swimming pools. The bathrooms have clever sliding screens that allow them to be either totally open plan and part of the room, or closeted off, or any stage in between!
There are two principal restaurants to choose from in the Tivoli Victoria hotel: the Sensorial a large buffet/show cooking service or the epicurean Emo where exquisite dishes are prepared in a very cool setting with dark walls and black tablecloths.
Outside there are twin swimming pools, sundecks and a pool bar. And of course the Clubhouse and practice facilities are just across the lane (or walk through the tunnel under the hotel directly to the club storage room).
On the top floor of the hotel you will find the cavernous Banyan spa with its dark cool black marble walls. A very impressive part of the hotel where you can be pampered to your heart's content with all manner of treatments available in addition to the indoor pool, sauna, hammam and water jets.
|Crowne Plaza Vilamoura*****
The Crowne Plaza is one of Vilamoura's oldest newest hotels. That might sound a little odd, but what happened in 2009 was the shell of one of the oldest hotels on the seafront was gutted and completely restructured internally to become one of the best hotels in Vilamoura: modern history.
Styled in Moorishesque whites throughout the bright airiness of the entrance lobby, reception lounges and bar are a breath of fresh air on the Vilamoura scene. The bedrooms are modern and delicately decorated with large marble encrusted bathrooms. Deluxe bedrooms and Suites have glass partitions into the sleeping areas (with modesty screens).
The gardens around the Crowne Plaza Vilamoura have a large swimming pool and plenty of space for a host of sun loungers on the bermuda-grassed lawns that lead down to the beach.
When it comes to dining the restaurant on the ground floor is very good and it is only a very short stroll to the marina with its multitude of restaurants and nite-spots.
One of the most surprising features of the hotel is the large domed spa building that houses a good-sized indoor pool, whirlpool, sauna, hammam and plenty of treatment rooms for massages and beauty treatments (should you feel you need them!).
|Vila Gale Ampalius****
The Vila Gale Ampalius hotel is a big, bright hotel on the seashore just a couple of hundred yards or so to the centre of Vilamoura with all of its evening entertainments around the marina.
The public areas, like the reception, bar and restaurant are spacious, yet they somehow manage to retain a friendly welcoming feel thanks to the long-standing management and staff team.
The hotel bedrooms are a good size and many have balconies (only the standard rooms facing the town do not. There is a small outdoor pool with a large patio/sunbathing area and the beach is just a matter of yards away. Inside, there is a another pool and whirlpool, plus a small spa area for massages, saunas and the like.
The bar is fairly open-plan extending out almost into the reception area. Due to the number of residents at any one time the restaurant normally operates in buffet style.
One of the most interesting features of the Ampalius are the two-bedroom/two-bathroom Suites, which come complete with kitchen/diner. Suitable for up to four golfers they provide additional space plus the ability to cater or entertain with their kitchen facilities and dining tables. Perfect for the longer Vilamoura golf holiday.
|Dom Pedro Golf*****
The very first golf hotel built around the marina in Vilamoura and designed from the ground up with golfing groups in mind.
A vast reception lobby adjoins the reception and encompasses the hotel bar; it is a lively scene each evening with numerous golfing autopsies being carried out to the tune of the band. Outside, the expansive garden has a large pool, three tennis courts and ample space for sunbathing; adjoining is the small spa with indoor pool and sauna.
During the height of the summer, aperitifs, breakfast and dinner can all be taken al fresco. There are two formulas for dinner: a great value three-course buffet or the à la carte menu.
Our prices are based on standard bedrooms, which are adequate for golfers who will be out and about most of the day – Club rooms give you more space and a few added extras.
|Dom Pedro Marina****- Vilamoura
In the centre of Vilamoura the Dom Pedro Marina is probably the smallest hotel on the quay and and as such has an almost family run feel to it.
The standard rooms all have their own small balconies: in the Suites the balconies overlook the marina and are much larger with plenty of room to spread out inside and out under the wicker sunshades on their verandahs. (Huge Presidential Suites are also available).
The garden bar and pool behind the hotel makes a fairly private spot for some post match therapy. Later things gently enliven with occassional strolling musicians known to make an appearance.
The restaurant serves a tantalising mix of Portuguese and Italian cuisine, while the marina is only yards away with a full range of other dining/drinking/dancing options.
A superbly designed apartment style hotel where bedrooms are really suites as they come complete with kitchenettes and sitting/dining rooms. These are grouped around a south facing sunny garden, large pool, bar and restaurant, where breakfast is served: so no need to use the kitchen if you don't want to!
Standard suites sleep two, there are also larger suites with two Double or Twin rooms, two bathrooms, full kitchen, and larger dining/sitting rooms – perfect for two couples, groups of four or as two very Single rooms.
A little removed from the bustle of Vilamoura, the Formosa Park sits quietly on the edge of the Ria Formosa and a dusty footpath from the garden meanders across this nature reserve out to the Atlantic beaches.
The Formosa Park has strong ties with both San Lorenzo and Pinheiros Altos golf courses, so holidays include golf at these two courses, making for an incredibly good value and htigh quality golf holiday.
If you would like to stay closer to reality in the old Algarve, then the town of Faro is an intriguing spot. It also opens up the new cluster of courses to the East and even into Spain... The Hotel Eva sits in the centre of the old town beside the pleasure port and the pedestrianised shopping streets around Faro’s churches. Although a little austere from the outside, the Hotel Eva’s freshly redecorated interior, friendly staff, well-appointed rooms (with balconies), good restaurant and lounge bar make it the place to stay in town.
The real surprise is the roof-top swimming pool and bar from where you can look out over the city and enjoy a sundowner or two as the sun sinks into the Ria Formosa. One thing you won’t find in Faro is fluent English and menus in seven languages, so you will have to throw yourself into the local culture and have a go - unless that is, you happen to be fluent in Portuguese?
In many ways more of a motel than a hotel, the very competitively priced Pines Resort is one of the latest additions to the array of hotels in Quinta do Lago. Sited just off the main road that links all the golf courses in Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo, it is just 500yards from the Bougainvillea Shopping centre – essentially the hub of Quinta do Lago with its bars and restaurants, plus a host of shops and even a night club or two.
The bedrooms, although not as large as some, have all the necessities, including bathrobes and soft mini-bars. In the reception area you will find the bar, a good restaurant and outdoor pool.
The Pines Resort represents very good value for simple accommodation on the Algarve – especially if you would prefer single rooms for your party.
